Lill, one of our three kids who live in LA, has gone on cleanups for the Los Angeles River most of which is in a concrete culvert, with no opportunity for sediment to be safely deposited on soil. Although Edward and I had a marvelous trip recently, it was stunning to see the amount of litter thrown on the streets and there were few sidewalk trashcans.
Public spirited citizens show up for supervised clean ups and Lill has done this for the river. When it is particularly low, it’s safe to walk in that culvert and pick up litter. She said it depressing to see so much trash which if not removed goes straight into the Pacific Ocean. Oceans can be overwhelmed – after a rain it is not safe to surf for two days due to pollution in the water.
