Salt cellars

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. My husband Edward was an inveterate collector of cool stuff – we have about two dozen individual salt cellars, so we're ready for a dinner party for 24 people. You put one above someone’s place setting and add a tiny spoon, if you have those; otherwise, the person can take a pinch of salt with their fingers or use the tip of a clean knife. We use these on the table, everyone’s finger goes in the same one. Salt is hygroscopic – it absorbs moisture from the air, and boy, oh, boy, our salt cellar has water in it about twice as high as the salt. I’ve left it there, waiting to see how much water it will absorb. I put a clean one with just a little bit of salt for each meal, then wash it.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
