Big yellow spiders

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. One of the common spiders that weave webs made noticeable by that distinctive zigzag pattern called stabilimentum is the yellow garden spider; if you have a garden, you’ll probably see these as they like to make their webs in vegetation about four feet off the ground and in a sunny spot – like your garden. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this zigzag pattern actually attracted insects for her to eat –and even more providential if they were unwelcomed ones, but sadly, it probably doesn’t; researchers aren’t sure why. If you look up Big Yellow Spiders in South Carolina, Clemson h g I c, you can learn all about these and the two other native so-called writing spiders we have, plus, as always these days, yet another invasive one. None of them are aggressive.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
