The two little pigs

Making It Grow, with host Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. We have two populations of our native black bears here, one concentrated in Horry and Georgetown counties and the other in the Appalachian Mountains. Once when staying with friends near Bat Cave, we had taken some cleaned, small wild pigs to cook and had them in a cooler on the back deck. When I got up in the morning to start preparing them, the other food in the cooler was still neatly arranged but the pigs were gone. When everyone woke up, our wildlife expert said, “Well, a bear came and got them.” And when we looked around outside, a nearby tree had a broken limb and there was butcher paper on the ground. The next night our dog barked hysterically at the glass door– the bear had come back for more pigs.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
