Soft-necked and hard-necked garlic

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
"Making It Grow," with host Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Hats, hats, hats, For thirty plus years, I’ve been scratching my head, sometimes literally, about what to use for my hats for the M I G show. I prefer “side of the road stuff,” think I told you that a new highway patrol agent asked an older one what to do about that woman who kept going into the railroad cut and was told not to worry, she wasn’t dangerously crazy! Anyhow, I’ve ordered a long length of braided garlic to use in an upcoming show. Garlic comes in two main forms, hard necked, that’s grown where it’s colder, and soft neck, the one we should be planting right now in our southern gardens. Soft neck garlic is milder, and stores better than hard necked, it’s the one you get in grocery stores.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
