RUDY MANCKE:

Hi, this is Rudy Mancke from USC for NatureNotes.

Evan was working over at Savannah River Site and noticed a really interesting moth there and was wondering what species it was. She figured it was a saturniid, one of the silk moths, but it was the smallest one she had ever seen. And she was correct in that, but she just wondered which one.

It was one of the oakworm moths. Anisota is the genus name. Interesting animals because they pupate in the ground and then when they come out, the female releases a pheromone and the males are active any time that pheromone comes. I've often seen them mating in broad daylight — usually you figure moths are more active at night.
