RUDY MANCKE:

Hi, this is Rudy Mancke from USC for NatureNotes.

Kay was at a friend's home, a mountain home in Todd, North Carolina. And when they opened the garage door, they saw a small snake coiled up there. She sent me a photograph of it — sort of a grayish color with a ring around the neck.

Now, what would be the perfect name? Yes, ringnecked snake. And it was a complete ring, which meant it was the northern version of the ringnecked snake. With the southern version, there's a break in the ring. But this one was complete.

They're small, they're non-venomous, they feed on soft bodied animals, including things like salamanders.

But a beautiful little snake, all coiled up. And they delighted in it.
