RUDY MANCKE:
Hi, this is Rudy Mancke from USC for NatureNotes.
Malcolm saw something hanging on the side of a shed on Sullivan's Island. It looked like a moth to him and he was wondering what in the world it was. It was an antlion adult with spots on the wings. The spotted-winged antlion is one of the names for it. One of the nerve-winged insects.
The larva is what we call a doodlebug — digs down in a pit and grabs things. It's a predator. The adult doesn't live long, but, of course, it isn't down in the sand. It was the adult that he had seen. Does resemble a moth to some degree.
