TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I am Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis is a true beacon of musical genius born in the vibrant city of New Orleans in 1961, hailing from a rich musical lineage.

He’s the only artist to win Grammy Awards in the jazz and classical categories in the same year. His groundbreaking oratorio, Blood on the Fields, made history as the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, highlighting his extraordinary blend of technical prowess and deep, emotional storytelling.

But Wynton’s influence extends far beyond his performances! As the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, he passionately connects diverse audiences to the thrilling world of jazz, honoring its rich heritage and inspiring new generations. His commitment to jazz education ensures that this beautiful art form continues to flourish for years to come.

This has been Rapp On Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible in part by Layman Poupard Publishers, producers of the Literary Criticism Series and the Dictionary of Literary Biography.
