“M” is for Mann, James Robert (1920-2010). Congressman. A native of Greenville, Mann graduated from the Citadel in 1941. After military service in World War II, he attended USC Law School and practiced in Greenville. He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1948. Mann was elected to Congress in 1968 and served until 1979. His most notable service was as a member of the Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of Richard Nixon. Hecrafted the portions of the first and second Articles of Impeachment so as to make them acceptable to both Republicans and southern colleagues. In 1975, President Gerald Ford was prepared to nominate Mann to the U.S. Military Court of Appeals. However, James Robert Mann declined the appointment and, in 1979 retired from Congress and resumed his law practice in Greenville.
