“T” is for Timothy, Peter (ca. 1725-1782). Newspaper printer, patriot. Born in Holland, Timothy immigrated with his parents to Philadelphia and then relocated with them to Charleston. His father was the printer of the South-Carolina Gazette. At his father’s death, Timothy’s mother continued managing the paper in her son’s name until he reached his legal majority. Timothy was the official printer of the Commons House of Assembly. Under his control, the newspaper became increasingly partisan and critical of local British officials and British imperial policies. He was a member of the Commons House of Assembly, the First and Second Provincial Congresses, and the First General Assembly. Timothy was also active in the Sons of Liberty. During the Revolution, when Charleston fell to the British, Peter Timothy was among the patriots exiled and imprisoned in St. Augustine.
