“G” is for Gillman, Caroline Howard (1794-1888). Writer. Born in Boston Caroline married Harvard Divinity graduate Samuel Gillman and moved with him to Charleston. From 1832 to 1839, as a wife and mother, she began publishing and editing a newspaper for young readers and their families called the Rose-Bud or Southern Rose-Bud and finally, the Southern Rose. One of the first publications of its kind, it became hugely popular, especially with women. Gillman was the author of two novels--Recollections of a Housekeeper and Recollections of a Southern Matron that attempted to show the domestic similarities between households of the North and South, while also stressing the importance of home and hearth. She also published eleven collections of verse, stories, and sketches. In the mid-nineteenth century Caroline Howard Gillman was a well-loved and prolific writer.
