“B” is for Beasley, David Muldrow (b. 1957). Governor. A native of Lamar, Beasley graduated from the USC School of Law. He served in the S.C. House (1979-1994). Originally elected as a Democrat, he switched parties and in 1994 was elected governor as a Republican. As governor he declared that the Confederate battle flag atop the State House should be moved another location on the capital grounds. His 1998 campaign for re-election was unsuccessful. In 2017 Beasley was appointed Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations. In December 2020 he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the WFP for its efforts to combat world hunger. In March 2023 David Muldrow Beasley completed his term with the WFP and announced plans to retire to his family farm in Darlington County.

Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
