“P” is for Perry, James Margrave (1894-1964)

“P” is for Perry, James Margrave (1894-1964). Attorney. “Miss Jim” Perry was the first woman admitted to the South Carolina Bar and a distinguished lawyer and civic leader for forty years. Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of James Margrave Perry who his daughter after himself. After graduating from Greenville Female College she enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1917 she obtained her Juris Doctor degree and was admitted to the California Bar. Perry returned to Greenville where she practiced law. Perry was active in civic affairs: volunteering with the Girl Scouts and helping organize Hopewell Tuberculosis Hospital. She was active in the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party. James Margrave Perry was an animal lover, beginning a local humane society and spearheading the creation of the Greenville Animal Shelter.

Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
