“M” is for McGuire, Frank Joseph (1913-1994). Basketball coach. A native New Yorker, McGuire played his college ball at St. John’s University. After service in World War II, he coached at St. John’s (1947-1952) and the University of North Carolina (1953-1961). In 1964 he was hired as the coach at the University of South Carolina where he changed the face of basketball in the state forever. In 1968 McGuire’s winning teams moved into the new Carolina Coliseum –popularly known “as the house that Frank built.” His most successful teams were in the early 1970s and two squads had perfect home records in Atlantic Coast Conference play. His 1970-1971 team won the ACC Tournament championship and represented the conference in the NCAA tournament. In 1977 the Frank McGuire Arena in the Carolina Coliseum was named in his honor.
