“L” is for Logan, Martha Daniell (1704-1779). Horticulturist. Born in Charleston, Logan inherited her father’s landholdings and nursery in 1718. She was interested in gardening and horticulture for most of her life. Realizing that amateur gardeners needed advice, she published the “Gardener’s Kalendar” which became a standard text for colonial South Carolina gardeners and contributed a gardening guide for John Tobler’s South Carolina Almanack. Logan exchanged seeds with other botanical enthusiasts, including the naturalist John Bartram. He visited Charleston in 1760 and described her garden as a “delight.” This visit began an exchange of correspondence and seeds and plants from their respective colonies. In a letter to others, he complimented Logan and her garden. Martha Daniell Logan also maintained a nursery and as a professional horticulturist, sold roots, cuttings, and seeds at her nursery.
