After service in World War II, he returned home to Colombia, engaged in local business affairs and was director of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. In the 1950s he was active in Richland County politics and following his involvement in the South Carolina Democrats for Nixon in 1960, he affiliated with the state's fledgling Republican Party.
