“G” is for Gilbreth, Frank Bunker, Jr. (1911-201). Writer, newspaper columnist. A native of New Jersey, Gilbreth graduated from the University of Michigan in 1933. He worked for a number of newspapers before World War II, including the Charleston News and Courier. In 1947, he returned to Charleston and joined the staff of the News and Courier. For his popular column, “Doing the Charleston” (that ran for fifty-one years), Gilbreth wrote under the pseudonym Ashley Cooper. He is best known as the co-author (with his sister Ernestine) of Cheaper by the Dozen, about their childhood as two of twelve children in a house managed like a factory. Translated into thirty languages, it was a best seller and made into a successful film. In 1998 Frank Bunker Gilbreth, Jr. was named to the South Carolina Academy of Authors.
