US Senate

  • Just one day before early voting began in the runoff race, U.S. Sen. Darline Graham and U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman debated one-on-one at the Newberry Opera House.
  • On this episode of the South Carolina Lede for August 8, 2026: host Gavin Jackson introduces you to the top five candidates vying for the republican nomination for U.S. Senate on August 11 in the Senate special republican primary.
  • Judge Daniel Coble said that the state GOP must certify Danny Ford II within 24 hours and that the state Election Commission needs to include him on early voting and election day ballots.
  • Annie Andrews, a pediatrician vying to become South Carolina's Democratic senator, is in an unexpected spotlight. How she navigates it will keep or lose her supporters.
  • On this episode of the South Carolina Lede for December 16, 2025: a preview from House Speaker Murrell Smith and other members of House Republican leadership on their priorities for 2026; a South Carolinian is set to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate; the measles outbreak continues to rage in the Upstate; and more!
  • State Rep. Krystle Matthews has won the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Matthews was the second-place finisher in a June 14 primary and defeated author and preservationist Catherine Fleming Bruce in Tuesday's runoff. Matthews said she wants to change a toxic culture she says leads senators and others in power to strip away the rights of minorities and those who are in the most need of protection. Scott has been one of South Carolina's more popular politicians. The Senate's sole Black Republican had no primary opposition and has said this will be his last term if he is reelected.
  • South Carolina jurist Michelle Childs is one step closer to confirmation for the federal court typically seen as a proving ground for the nation's highest bench. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 17-5 Thursday to approve Childs' nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. It now goes to the full Senate for a vote. Childs has been a federal judge on South Carolina's District Court for more than a decade. Earlier this year, she was on a shortlist of candidates being considered by President Joe Biden for an upcoming vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Her bipartisan supporters include Democratic U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.
  • The chances of having early voting in upcoming elections in South Carolina appears to be dying after the state House and governor accused the Senate of a power grab. The Republicans aren't happy with fellow Republicans in the Senate changing the bill so they can confirm the governor's selections for the state elections board. The bill unanimously passed both the House and Senate. But with Gov. Henry McMaster's backing, House leaders say they may send the bill back to committee to kill it. Both blame Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey. Massey says the approval is a needed check because the governor didn't punish the board or executive director for poor choices made about ballot drop boxes and whether to require absentee ballot signatures during the 2020 elections.
