Benny Green – Monk – 9/6/14

From the KC Jazz Club at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, it’s the music of Thelonious Monk, the 20th century pianist who left a trove of compositions and recordings. Onstage is a current jazz treasure, Benny Green, getting ready to play some of Monk’s best. Peter Washington is on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. Special guest Gary Smulyan on bari sax will join the festivities a little later.

Eddie Palmieri – 9/13/14

The 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Septet are at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Palmieri has been a force for Latin Jazz since the 1950’s, when he hosted the legendary mambo shows at New York’s Palladium Ballroom. His groups, including the renowned La Perfecta, revolutionized Latin music in the 1960s and 70’s. His records number more than 30 albums as a leader, and he has won nine Grammy Awards. At age 76, he is still a foremost ambassador for the music he loves.

Monterey at 55 -- 9/20/14

In September 2012, the Monterey Jazz Festival celebrated 55 years. The late Dave Brubeck was among the founders. Dizzy Gillespie made many an appearance. Charles Mingus and Charles Lloyd recorded landmark albums at Monterey. Jon Hendricks staged a history of jazz there. Monterey has commissioned music by many contemporaries – Cedar Walton, Roy Hargrove, Billy Childs. Much of the music has been recorded and lives at Stanford University in the Monterey archive. On this edition of JazzSet, MJF on Tour is at the Kennedy Center and we have highlights. All the music has been part of the repertoire over 55 Monterey Jazz Festivals.

Steve Wilson – 9/28/14

Steve Wilson puts a new take on the Charlie Parker classic recording Bird with Strings. To inaugurate the 2011-12 jazz season at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Director of Jazz Kevin Struthers called on go-to alto-sax man Steve Wilson, and Steve delivered an all-star jazz quartet plus three violins, a violist and a cellist. The stage is full with expectations, as jazz meets classical musicians and vice versa. They are here to play music from Charlie Parker’s legendary Bird with Strings sessions – recordings that the bebop master released in 1950. Steve Wilson is re-imagining Bird with Strings for a whole new audience on JazzSet.
