South Carolina's Watermelon Queen shares the health benefits of watermelon

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio
Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. The South Carolina Watermelon Queen, this year she’s Gracen Vaughn, travels statewide, and in other states, handing out watermelon slices at school field days, farmers markets, grocery stores, festivals, and more gatherings – telling people about the health benefits of watermelons. One motto is "Watermelons Fuel Athletes." At the Cooper River Bridge Run, she and other queens handed out forty thousand cups of watermelon. Watermelon is 92% water and has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable. It’s also a good source of vitamins A and C, and a cup has just 46 calories. You can blend it up and take it with you, instead of sports drinks, and it tastes better. At watermelon.org, you’ll find recipes and carvings that are stunningly fun.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
