Hello, Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Fall is the time for planting some of our favorite vegetables. Collard greens, mustard, kale and some root vegetables like turnips which are eaten for leaves but also their storage bulbs are a treat for South Carolinians as our relatively mild winters are just what they like. Another root vegetable that is almost impossible to find freshly harvested and not waxed is rutabaga, a fresh rutabaga is almost as good as a fresh tomato. Another fall vegetable we don’t often think of but use year-round is garlic. This is the perfect time to plant it, you want to let it get a head start before whatever passes for really cold weather in South Carolina, mulch keep it happy during winter, comes, harvest time comes in mid-summer.
