“C” is for Campbell, Carroll Ashmore, Jr. (1940-2005). Legislator, congressman, governor. A native of Greenville, Campbell attended the University of South Carolina. His political career began when he was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 1971.In 1976 he was elected to the S.C. Senate and two years later to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Fourth Congressional District. He remained in Congress until he was elected governor in 1986. He was reelected in 1990 and played major roles in the campaigns of Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Following the 1990 “Lost Trust” scandal, Campbell created a citizens panel for the purpose of making recommendations on state government reform. In 1993 the General Assembly passed Governor Carroll Ashmore Campbell, Jr.’s reorganization plan that consolidated 145 state agencies and created a cabinet that increased the governor’s power.
