“D” is for Davie, William Richardson (1756-1820). Soldier, jurist, statesman. Born in England, Davie immigrated with his family to South Carolina, where he was raised by an uncle in the Waxhaws. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) with first honors in 1776. In the 1779 Battle of Stono he was seriously wounded and it took a year for him to recover. In 1780 he raised and outfitted a patriot troop of his own and led his men in action at the Battle of the Waxhaws and Hanging Rock. Davie’s command included white settlers and Catawba Indians. In 1781 Davie was made commissary general of the Southern Army. After the war, he settled in Halifax, North Carolina.
