“A” is for Allan, Sarah Campbell (1861-1954). Physician. Born in Charleston, Allan graduated from a local female seminary but was refused admission to the all-male College of Charleston. After being refused admission to the Medical College of South Carolina, she attended and graduated from the Women’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. Returning to South Carolina she scored the highest grade of fourteen applicants before the South Carolina Medical Board. In 1895 Allan accepted a position at the South Carolina Hospital for the Insane to care for female patients and to train nurses in anatomy and physiology. After eleven years she resigned and returned to Charleston to care for her aging father. Sarah Campbell Allan spent the remainder of her forty-six years given over to numerous charitable and civic organizations.
