“J” is for Johnson, Harriet Catherine Frazier (1889-1972). Legislator, state 4-H Club leader. Johnson was born in Pelzer and reared in Walhalla. After graduating from Winthrop College, she was hired by Spartanburg County as a home extension agent—beginning a twenty-five year career with the extension service. From 1922 to 1944, Johnson served as the head of the state 4-H girls’ clubs. In 1945 Johnson became the first woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, winning a special election to fill a vacant seat. Johnson defeated her three male opponents by five votes. Johnson served only one term and devoted the remainder of her life to missionary and volunteer work. In 1951 the Progressive Farmer magazine named Harriet Catherine Frazier “Woman of the Year” for her service in rural progress in South Carolina.
