“E” is for Ellison, Lilllian (1923-2007)

“E” is for Ellison, Lilllian (1923-2007). Professional wrestler. Known to the world as the “Fabulous Mooloah,” Ellison was born in Tookiedoo, South Carolina. The family moved to Columbia in the 1930s where she sometimes attended wrestling matches with her father. Deciding that she would become a female wrestler, Ellison fought her first match in Boston in 1949. After spending several years as the character “Slave Girl Moolah,” a valet of sorts for male wrestlers, she came into her own as the “Fabulous Moolah.” From 1956 to 1984 she held the Women’s Championship belt. In the ring she relished the role of the bad girl who broke the rules by using dirty tricks, blunt objects, hair pulling, kicking, and cheap shots landed after the bell. In 2003, Lillian Ellison was inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.
