“F” is for Fraser, Charles (1782-1860). Miniature portraitist, painter. A native Charlestonian, Fraser was essentially self-taught but enjoyed early friendships with other Charleston artists. In 1801 he was introduced to the miniature portraitist Edward Greene Malbone. Stylistically, Fraser’s miniature portraits relate closely to those of Malbone. Fraser spent his entire life in Charleston, painting miniature portraits of his fellow citizens and visiting dignitaries. He enjoyed a long and acclaimed career and produced an impressive volume of miniature portraits. Fraser extended his artistic experiences with numerous trips north where he met with the country’s leading artists. He was active in the fledgling South Carolina Academy of Fine Arts and a trustee of the College of Charleston. One of South Carolina’s most distinguished native artists, Charles Fraser achieved national and international recognition as a miniature portraitist during his lifetime.
