“L” is for Lieber, Oscar Montgomery (1830-1862). Geologist. Born in Boston, Lieber moved to Columbia in 1835. At age nine he was sent to Germany to attend school. He returned to Columbia at age sixteen and assisted in a geological survey of South Carolina. He then studied at universities in Berlin and Göttengen and the School of Mines in Freiberg. With renewed interest in mining and minerals in South Carolina, the General Assembly authorized a four-year study and elected Lieber “Geological, Mineralogical, and Agricultural Surveyor” of the state. In his position, Lieber produced four annual reports entitled Report on the Survey of South Carolina. Lieber struggled to meet his father’s expectations academically, professionally, and politically. In 1860 Oscar Montgomery Lieber sided with the Confederacy while his brothers and fathers served government of the United States.
