“S” is for Selvy, Franklin Delano (b. 1932). A native of Corbin, Kentucky, Selvy played college basketball for Furman University. He is best known for his high scoring performances that made national headlines, including 100 points in a 149-95 victory over Newberry College. He was the first college player to average more than forty points per game in a single season—and the first to score more than 1,000 points in a single season. A three-time All-American, Selvy played professional basketball with several teams—including the St. Louis Hawks with whom he won a world championship. Retiring from professional basketball, he coached at Furman for six seasons. He then entered the business world and worked for the St. Joe Paper Company in Laurens. Frank Delano Selvy retired in 1995 and lives in Simpsonville.
