“M” is for Middleton, Henry (1717-1784)

“M” is for Middleton, Henry (1717-1784). Planter, politician, president of the Continental Congress. Born in South Carolina, Middleton inherited property in South Carolina, England, and Barbados. In the 1740s and 1750s he served in the Commons House of Assembly, serving twice as Speaker. In 1755 he was appointed to the Royal Council. Middleton resigned from the Royal Council in 1770 and thereafter was aligned with the revolutionary movement. In 1774 he was elected to both the First and Second Continental Congresses—serving as president of the First. He resigned from Congress as the colonies moved toward independence. Back in South Carolina he served in both houses of the legislature and was a member of the Council of Safety. When Charleston surrendered in 1780, Henry Middleton took the protection of the Crown, but was not penalized after the war.
