“H” is for Holman, Clarence Hugh (1914-1981). Educator, author. A native of Cross Anchor, Holman graduated from Presbyterian College and remained at the school as an instructor and eventually academic dean. In 1946 he began graduate work in English at the University of North Carolina—completing his doctorate in 1949. The English Department at Chapel Hill then hired him as an assistant professor. Holman served as chair of the English Department, dean of the Graduate School, and Provost of the University. Holman wrote, cowrote, or edited some twenty-six books of nonfiction and seventy professional articles—primarily dealing with southern writers. He was best known for his work on Thomas Wolfe and his several revisions of A Handbook to Literature. Hugh Clarence Holman’s many honors culminated in his appointment as Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
