“M” is for Moore, Andrew Charles (1866-1928)

“M” is for Moore, Andrew Charles (1866-1928). Biologist, educator. After graduating from the South Carolina College, Moore did graduate work at the University of Chicago. He was appointed assistant professor of biology, geology and mineralogy at South Carolina College in 1900. In 1906 Moore became head of the newly created Department of Biology. He served for some years as Dean of the University and on two occasions as acting president. In 1923 two years before the Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, Moore wrote a paper on the evolution/creationism controversy. In his treatise Moore exhibited a modern point of view and a mind open to the discoveries of science. The herbarium in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina is named for Andrew Charles Moore as is an elementary school in Columbia.

Dr. Edgar received his B.A. degree from Davidson College in 1965 and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After two years in the army (including a tour of duty in Vietnam), he returned to USC as a post-doctoral fellow of the National Archives, assigned to the Papers of Henry Laurens.
