“S” is for Steele, Henry Maxwell (1922-2005). Writer, educator. A native of Greenville, Steele attended Furman University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His first published story appeared in Harper’s in 1944. Steele is best known for his short stories, which have appeared in Harper's and other national magazines. His published three collections of short stories: Where She Brushed Her Hair and Other Short Stories, The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers, and The Hat of My Mother: Stories. Steele began teaching in 1956 at the University of North Carolina where he later served as writer in residence, professor, and director of the creating creative writing program. Under his leadership, the writing program produced some of the nation's most promising young writers. In 1992 Henry Maxwell Steele was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of authors.
