“T” is for Thompson, Waddy, Jr. (1798-1868). Congressman, diplomat. Thompson graduated from South Carolina College, was admitted to the bar, and established a flourishing legal practice in Greenville. He represented Greenville District in the General Assembly and was an ardent supporter of John C. Calhoun and nullification. A Nullifier in a Unionist district, he did not stand for re-election in 1830. With nullification rampant across the state, he was elected to the U.S. Congress and was instrumental in obtaining congressional recognition of Texas independence in 1837. In 1846 he published his valuable memoir, Recollections of Mexico. In 1842 Waddy Thompson, Jr., co-founded the Southern Patriot, a Unionist newspaper in Greenville.
