Icy Travel Possible in Highest Elevations Early Friday

Dec 12, 2019

Travelers in highest elevations of South Carolina near the North Carolina border may experience a brief period of freezing rain late Thursday evening into early Friday morning.

Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to spread over the Palmetto State, starting after sunset on Thursday. An area of high pressure over the Mid Atlantic and New England states is causing relatively cold, dry air to slide into the mountains of South Carolina. Ground temperatures may be very close to freezing, particularly in northern parts of Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Cherokee counties as the precipitation begins. Warmer air moving in from the south is forecast to change the precipitation to plain rain before sunrise Friday morning.
