SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A private liberal arts college in South Carolina has dedicated an environmental studies center that opened at the beginning of this academic year.

The Chandler Center for Environmental Studies at Wofford College has received recognition for its sustainable design, earning three Green Globes from the Green Globes Certification program, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal reported.

“This has been a remarkable year at Wofford College. During a pandemic, we managed to complete a $300 million comprehensive campaign, including the construction of the Chandler Center for Environmental Studies,” President Nayef Samhat said in a statement.

The building was designed to meet the needs of the environmental studies faculty and students. It has laboratories and classrooms, a rooftop garden and spaces customized for lessons in sustainability, green building, food systems and energy efficiency.

A dedication ceremony was held May 7 for the building that is named for donors Harold and Delores Chandler.

Harold Chandler is a Belton native and Wofford alumnus and trustee emeritus. He was the college’s 1971 valedictorian and football team captain and quarterback. He served on the Milliken & Co. board for many years, retiring as board chairman in 2019. The Chandler family has supported 14 endowed scholarships at Wofford College.
