Town of Summerton announces general election for mayor

The South Carolina Elections Commission has announced the date of the Town of Summerton general election for mayor.

The Town’s previous Mayor, Tony Junious, died following a car crash in mid-Jan. Junious made Summerton history by becoming the town’s first Black mayor after defeating incumbent Mac Bagnal in 2022.

The election for the role of mayor will be held Tues., April 2, and Town of Summerton residents will also be choosing two town council members.

The period to file to be a candidate for mayor opens at noon on Fri., Feb. 2, and closes at noon on Fri., Feb. 16.

Registration forms for potential candidates to need to be filled, completed, and sent to the Clarendon County Voter Registration & Election Office.

Summerton residents who want to vote in the upcoming election need to do the following:

  • Register to vote no later than Sunday, March 3. Mailed applications will be accepted if postmarked by Monday, March 4.
  • Early voting for this election begins Monday, March 18, and ends Friday, March 29. Early voters can cast their ballot 8:30 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday, at the Clarendon County Voter Registration & Elections Office
  • On April 2, election day, the following precincts will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.:
    • Summerton 1: Summerton Fire Station, 6 N Canty St.
    • Summerton 2: Summerton Cultural Arts Center, 12 South Church St.
    • Summerton 3: Clarendon 1 Resource Center Gym, 1154 41st Street

For the time being, Darion Canty will hold the role of interim mayor.
