More than 1.5 million South Carolinians have already voted in the 2024 general election, shattering the state's early turnout in 2020 and 2022.
That turnout accounts for about 45% of the state's more than 3.4 million registered voters.
"We are thrilled to see this record-breaking turnout during the early voting period as we head into a highly anticipated Election Day,” Howie Knapp, the State Election Commission's executive director, said in a statement Monday. “If you haven’t cast your ballot yet, get to the polls tomorrow (Tuesday) and exercise your right to vote.”
Democrats and Republicans have both pushed early voting this cycle, leading to turnout records in surrounding battleground states, Georgia and North Carolina.
South Carolina lawmakers passed a law allowing no-excuse, in-person early voting in 2022, but absentee voting restrictions were relaxed in 2020 because of the pandemic.
In all, more than 2.5 million South Carolina ballots were cast in the 2020 general election, and more than 1.7 million ballots were cast in 2022.
Early voting ended Saturday.
