The Upstate measles outbreak has continued to boom in 2026. The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) reported 54 new cases of measles within the state since Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Of the 700 confirmed cases, 524 were reported in January. Ten people are in isolation and 485 others are in general quarantine.
DPH also has identified more school exposures. Five schools in different Spartanburg school districts were confirmed as sources of exposure; Cooley Springs Elementary, Cannons Elementary, Abner Creek Middle, Mayo Elementary and Sugar Ridge Elementary all have students sent into quarantine.
Additionally, the agency announced four more businesses as potential exposure sites. Dates and times of exposure are:
- Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 6:10 to 10:10 p.m. at Anytime Fitness on Boiling Springs Rd. in Boiling Springs
- Tuesday, Jan 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the United States Post Office on Pennsylvania Ave. in Greer.
- Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 10:20 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Goodwill on Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greer.
- Saturday, Jan. 17 from 4 to 6:45 p.m. at Aldi on W. Floyd Baker Blvd. in Greer.
Anyone exposed to the disease at the newly reported locations should monitor for symptoms through Feb. 3. Symptoms can include a fever, a runny nose and a rash that almost always starts on the face.
SCDPH launched a measles dashboard subsection earlier this week. 89% of those who have contracted the disease are children.
