The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is advising South Carolinians of a statewide test of the AMBER Alert system. The test is planned for Wednesday between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
During the test, an AMBER Alert test message will appear on the SLED website while the alert tone will activate on cell phones throughout South Carolina. The safety exercise will help to ensure that new technology integrates into the existing state emergency alert system.
In 1996, the America's Missing Broadcast Emergency Response (AMBER) Alert program was created and named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered in Texas.
