In a 4-0 vote Wednesday, the South Carolina Election Commission appointed Conway Belangia as its next executive director.

The South Carolina Election Commission (SEC) has named its next executive director. During a special called meeting Wednesday, the SEC voted 4-0 to appoint Conway Belangia as the agency's new leader.

Belangia has more than four decades of experience as an elections official. Prior to this role, he served for 34 years as the Director of the Board of Voter Registration and Elections in Greenville County. He also has previously worked at the SEC and in Orangeburg County.

“I am honored and humbled to be chosen to lead the State Election Commission,” Belangia said. “I am committed to upholding the integrity, transparency, and accessibility of our state’s elections. I look forward to working with our team and partners at the state and local level to ensure every voter has confidence in the process.”

During his tenure in Greenville, Belangia was awarded the Moore Award by the South Carolina Association of Registration and Election Officials in 2018 and the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Henry McMaster in 2026.

The SEC's executive director serves as the state’s chief election official and oversees the agency’s day-to-day operations. The position is subject to Senate approval.
