Extreme drought conditions, the most severe of the five-level scale, are gone in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Drought Response Committee met Thursday and found that there is no place in the state experiencing extreme drought conditions. This comes after weeks of near-total extreme drought conditions across the state.

Department of Natural Resource officers say most of the state now falls under severe status. Ten counties within the Upstate and Midlands are labeled as moderate.

The response committee reports that statewide rainfall has been below normal for eight out of the past ten months. According to the S.C. Department of Environmental Services, streamflow and groundwater conditions remain below normal to well below normal across the state and support maintaining the current drought status for all counties with the exception of Edgefield County.

The committee will continue to closely monitor conditions and will reconvene on Aug. 6.
