Officers responded to a Spartanburg Cook Out restaurant Saturday night.

Two teenagers died after being shot at a Cook Out parking lot on John B. White Sr. Blvd. in Spartanburg. Police Chief Art Littlejohn, who was newly sworn in one day before the shootings, told reporters the victims were 15 and 17 years old.

“The young people that were here were not bad young people,” said Littlejohn. “They were just kids after Halloween night trick-or-treating, getting something to eat.”

The victims were identified as Jayden Watkins, 15, and Shane Dawkins, 17. Littlejohn said officers found the pair with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the restaurant after multiple calls related to the shooting. They both later died at a local hospital. The Spartanburg Police Department has not identified a suspect or made any arrests as of Monday morning.

“We have a duty as a police department to try and figure out what happened. We will figure out what happened,” Littlejohn said.

A third person was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
