Competing at the State Fair

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio

The South Carolina State Fair is scheduled to be held in Columbia from October the thirteenth through the twenty-fourth. Besides rides and great fair food, there are lots of competitions and displays. If you want to enter a competition, you must preregister in order to participate. There’s a link at their webpage letting you do that easily. One large categories is honey, in several presentations, and a beekeeper’s exhibit. The art area is always popular and includes fine art and student art. If you are a knitter or a baker, you’ll want to put your creation in the home and craft section. Agriculture in many forms is big – cattle, chicken, rabbits, horses, goats and sheep are all in that category and there is a flower exhibit as well. Search SC State Fair.org and do it all from the comfort of home.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
