Hi, I'm Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.
Born in 1941, pianist and composer Chick Corea was pivotal in bridging fusion and traditional jazz. As a member of Miles Davis's band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of fusion. As his Return to Forever Band leader, Corea crafted timeless masterpieces like “Spain” and “500 Miles High.”
His remarkable technical skills and willingness to embrace electronic sounds and world music set him apart. With 27 Grammy Awards to his name, his iconic 1968 album, “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs,” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Chick Corea passed away in 2021 at 79, but his profound impact on jazz piano and composition endures.
