Rapp on Jazz: Herschel Evans

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Mark Rapp and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Herschel "Tex" Evans was an exceptional tenor saxophonist whose contributions to the Count Basie Orchestra left a lasting impact on jazz.

Born in Denton, Texas, Tex spent part of his childhood in Kansas City, honing his skills in the jazz district jam sessions. His journey led him to Los Angeles, where he performed alongside icons such as Lionel Hampton, before he returned to Kansas City and became a featured soloist in the Basie Orchestra.

Evan’s talent shone, particularly in his dynamic exchanges with fellow saxophonist Lester Young. His standout moment came with a breathtaking solo on "Blue and Sentimental," captured in a recently unearthed recording alongside vocalist Helen Humes.

Evans remained a member of the Basie Orchestra until his death at 29.

This has been Rapp on Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible in part by The ETV Endowment of South Carolina.
