Jazz is thriving in South Carolina, especially on college campuses. The University of South Carolina has become a major player in jazz education, with programs that combine performance, theory, and history to prepare versatile musicians.
Winthrop University in Rock Hill offers jazz studies emphasizing improvisation and ensemble performance, giving students the tools to find their voice in the music.
At Furman University, jazz is part of a broader, well-rounded music curriculum, with big bands and combos performing regularly.
With its legacy as an HBCU, South Carolina State University has long nurtured musical excellence and is a cultural anchor for jazz in Orangeburg.
These programs preserve and promote South Carolina jazz, ensuring its vitality for future generations.
