Rapp on Jazz: Mentorship

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp on Jazz.

Mentorship has always been at the heart of jazz. You can learn scales, theory, and history in the classroom—and that foundation matters—but the bandstand teaches lessons no book ever can. On the bandstand, you learn how to listen, how to support others, when to lead, and when to step back. You learn accountability, humility, and trust in real time.

In jazz, mentorship isn’t formal or distant. It happens through shared gigs, late-night conversations, and subtle musical cues passed from one generation to the next. The classroom gives you the language; the bandstand teaches you how to speak it with honesty and purpose.

This has been Rapp On Jazz, a co-production of ColaJazz and SC Public Radio, made possible by Layman Publishing Partners, celebrating 50 years of expert content creation, authoritative information management, and standards-driven print and digital production.
