Rapp on Jazz: Failure

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Mark Rapp, and this is Rapp On Jazz.

Failure is one of the most important teachers in jazz. Every missed note, every rough gig, every moment that didn’t go as planned carries a lesson—if you’re willing to listen. Early on, I learned that growth doesn’t come from playing it safe. It comes from taking risks, making mistakes, and showing up again with a little more clarity than before.

Finding your voice in jazz isn’t about perfection. It’s about honesty. You learn who you are by testing ideas, pushing boundaries, and sometimes falling short. The key is understanding that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of the process.
